How to Iron On a Patch: A Step-by-Step Guide

Got a new Cherrychoke patch and wondering how to iron it on? Applying an iron-on patch is easy when you have the right setup and use enough heat and pressure to activate the adhesive.

Follow these simple iron-on patch instructions to securely apply your patch to a jacket, bag, shirt, or other suitable fabric.

What You’ll Need:

Before you start, make sure you have:

• Your Cherrychoke iron-on patch
• An iron
• A heat-resistant surface, such as an ironing board
• A towel or hand towel
• The fabric, garment or canvas bag you want to put your patch on

Important: Always check the heat tolerance and care instructions for your fabric before ironing.

How to Iron On a Patch

1. Preheat Your Iron

Set your iron to a temperature that is appropriate for the fabric you are applying the patch to. Check the garment or fabric's care label if you're unsure.

2. Prepare a Heat-Resistant Surface

Place your garment on an ironing board or another heat-resistant surface.

If you don't have an ironing board, place a towel on a sturdy table or countertop and put your garment on top.

3. Smooth the Fabric

Iron the area where you want to place your patch for a few seconds to make sure the fabric is smooth and free of wrinkles.

4. Position Your Patch

Place your Cherrychoke patch exactly where you want it.

Take a moment to make sure the placement looks right before applying heat.

5. Cover the Patch

Carefully place a clean towel or hand towel over the patch.

This creates a protective barrier between the iron and the patch.

Never iron directly onto the patch.

6. Apply Heat

Place the iron over the towel and move it in a circular motion for approximately 90 seconds.

Apply consistent pressure while making sure you cover the entire patch, including the edges.

7. Check the Patch

Carefully check the patch to make sure it is adhering properly.

If the patch is not fully attached, don't worry, you can apply additional heat.

8. Let the Patch Cool

Once the patch has been applied, remove the towel and allow the fabric and patch to cool completely to room temperature.

Cooling gives the adhesive time to harden and set.

What If My Iron-On Patch Isn't Sticking?

If you notice that an edge or another area of the patch hasn't adhered completely, place the towel back over the patch.

Iron over the area for another 60–90 seconds, then allow the patch to cool completely again.

For best results, make sure you are applying heat evenly across the entire patch.

Optional: Iron the Back of the Fabric

Once the patch has cooled, you can also iron the backside of the fabric for approximately 20 seconds, if the location of the patch allows you to do so.

Use circular motions and make sure the fabric can safely tolerate the heat.

Then allow the patch to cool completely.
